The children of Rekai Tangwena Children’s Home are the heart and soul of our institution. Each child is unique, with their own story, dreams, and aspirations. They come from various backgrounds and circumstances, but they all share the common experience of facing adversity and vulnerability.
At Rekai Tangwena Children’s Home, we provide a safe and nurturing environment where these children can heal, grow, and thrive. We understand the importance of meeting their physical, emotional, and educational needs, and work tirelessly to ensure that they receive the support they deserve.
Our dedicated and caring staff members provide round-the-clock care, ensuring that the children’s basic needs for food, shelter, and clothing are met. But our commitment goes beyond just providing the essentials. We believe in the power of education to transform lives, so we prioritize access to quality education for each child. We strive to equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to pursue their dreams and become contributing members of society.
Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of emotional well-being and provide comprehensive counselling and therapeutic services to help the children heal from any past traumas. We encourage their individual talents and interests, allowing them to explore various hobbies and extracurricular activities that enrich their lives and boost their self-confidence.
Children’s Needs
The children of Rekai Tangwena Children’s Home have various needs that we strive to fulfill to ensure their well-being and growth. Here are some of their specific needs:
1. Health: Growing children require a balanced and varied diet. While we make efforts to grow vegetables and purchase food wisely, the children need to consume meat more regularly and enjoy occasional treats like sweets and drinks. Access to nutritious food is essential for their overall health and development.
2. Snacks: Providing snacks for the children is important to ensure they have energy throughout the day and aid their concentration during school hours.
3. School fees: As the children reach school-going age, they attend nearby Nyamhuka Primary School. After Grade 7, they transition to Nyangani High School. However, attending school requires payment of school fees, purchasing uniforms, and obtaining necessary stationery. These expenses can put a strain on our limited resources. Ensuring that each child has the proper uniform and educational resources is crucial to their education.
4. Medication: We receive assistance from a local hospital for the children’s healthcare needs. However, the cost of medicines and drugs, particularly for children with epilepsy, can be significant. Offering support in this area helps ensure that all children receive necessary medical care and medication.
5. Clothing: The children, ranging in age from 3 to 18 years, rely on the generosity of local well-wishers for their clothing. Donations of second-hand clothing are appreciated, and occasionally, new clothes are given as birthday or holiday gifts.
