Our Projects
To sustain itself and provide the best care for the children, Rekai Tangwena Children’s Home implements various projects cantered on small-scale subsistence farming. These initiatives not only contribute to the overall self-sustainability of the home but also ensure a regular supply of food for the children. Here are the key projects undertaken by the home:
1. Poultry Farming: Rekai Tangwena Children’s Home operates a poultry farm consisting of 1000 layers, free-range chickens, and broilers. This project ensures a steady supply of eggs and meat for the children, reducing the reliance on external sources.

2. Fish Farming: As part of their sustainability efforts, the home engages in fish farming. This project provides a renewable source of protein-rich fish for the children’s meals, contributing to their overall nutrition.

3. Goat Rearing: Rekai Tangwena Children’s Home maintains a goat pen where they rear goats. This project offers multiple benefits, including a source of milk, meat, and future breeding opportunities. The goats also act as natural weed control agents, assisting in the maintenance of the surrounding environment.

4. Rabbit Husbandry: Another project undertaken by the home is raising rabbits. The rabbits serve as a source of protein and provide an alternative meat source for the children. Additionally, this project teaches the children about animal care and the responsible management of small livestock.

5. Vegetable Garden: Rekai Tangwena Children’s Home cultivates a vegetable garden to grow a variety of vegetables such as cabbages, carrots, green peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, and onions. This garden ensures a fresh supply of nutritious vegetables while teaching the children about sustainable agricultural practices and the importance of self-sufficiency.

6. Field Crops: To further enhance sustainability, the home cultivates crops including maize, beans, and sunflower. These crops not only provide staple food items but can also be sold as a source of income, contributing to the financial stability of the home.

These sustainable farming projects demonstrate the commitment of Rekai Tangwena Children’s Home to their self-sufficiency and the well-being of the children. By integrating agriculture into their operations, they create a sustainable source of food, reduce dependency on external resources, and teach the children valuable skills and knowledge about farming practices. These initiatives not only support the overall sustainability of the home but also nurture an environment of learning, responsibility, and productivity.
